On the top (third) floor of the house the single bedroom with mountain views is next to a second lounge area with ocean views. The lounge opens onto a second sun terrace with a barbecue and both mountain & ocean views.
Paul do Mar is still an important fishing harbour with both resident small local boats and larger visiting boats . The village is an important agriculture centre too with fields of bananas terraces of grapes and passion fruit. It's more famous now for the feel-good factor; peace and relaxation but, not far away from everything you may need with mini-supermarket and restaurants in the village and nearby in Calheta and Prazeres. This means that all can relax, swim and walk in these sunnier and hotter climes all year round!
The village is popular with both walkers and swimmers. It has several swimming areas such as the lagoon next to the harbour and the area around the slipway near Sunny House. The only access to the village besides boats until the late 1960's were ancient walk paths down the mountains to the beaches such as the 'CAMINHO REAL DO PAUL DO MAR' PR19 and the ancient ladeira walk from Faja da Ovelha. Paul do Mar is close to other famous mountain and levada walks in Calheta region including the PR 6 the 'RABACAL 25 SPRINGS' and the LEVADA NOVA.
Attractions include Calheta town 10 minutes drive away with WHITE SAND BEACHES and a swimming lagoon next to Calheta marina. Dolphin/whale-watching and big game fishing boats operate from the marina all year weather permitting. Near the marina there is A RUM FACTORY ENGENHOS with a museum. Also, there is the international art centre 'CASAS DAS MUDAS' perched on cliffs above Calheta marina. It stages performances and exhibitions. The centre has breathtaking architecture and views. Close to the town marina is a supermarket, 4 star hotel, restaurants and bars. In the old town is a small shopping centre, more eating places and all the facilities you need including banks, a petrol station, emergency hospital and chemist.
Another village near Paul do Mar worth visiting is PRAZERES with a17th century church, fruit and vegetable market THE JARDIM PEDAGOGICA complex with FREE ADMISSION including a free small zoo, 2 art galleries and cider & tea houses! Coastal/valley forest walks are accessible from Prazeres such as THE LEVADA NOVA.
Paul do Mar is WELL-LOCATED so its a great base both for walking and exploring the other parts of the island whether you take the old roads or the new roads. For example, from the town of Ribeira Brava about 25 minutes drive from Paul do Mar there's the fastest easiest access to the North of the island.
The village has a small supermarket, shops, a Catholic Church, a bank with a cash machine, medical centre, bars/cafes & restaurants. Other popular activities in & around the village are: fishing, swimming, snorkelling & surfing. 'Paul' is quite flat for Madeira, which is generally hilly & mountainous so itS easy to walk around, roller-skate & cycle.
There are many FESTAS (festivals) particularly over the long Summer in the historic centre of the village. The streets become full of different languages as the locals 'PAULENSE' who live work abroad most of the time return home with their families and friends for a well-earnt holiday!
